Tips for accurate results
- JPG compression smears thin text. Use the original file, not a re-forwarded copy.
- Crop out headers, logos and page margins so only the grid is read.
- Straight-on shots beat angled ones. Sheetshot fixes EXIF rotation and a few degrees of skew.
Why JPGs are harder than screenshots — and what Sheetshot does about it
JPEG is lossy: every save and every chat forward adds blocky artefacts around letters. Before OCR, Sheetshot downscales huge photos, corrects EXIF rotation, inverts dark-mode images and straightens slight skew, so the text engine sees cleaner characters.
Instead of dumping one blob of text, OCR returns each word with its position. Sheetshot groups words into rows by their vertical position and into columns by their horizontal position, then shows you the grid so you can merge, split or retype a cell before you export.
FAQ
- Is JPG to Excel different from JPEG to Excel?
- No. .jpg and .jpeg are the same format with two file extensions. Both work the same way in Sheetshot.
- Will amounts with commas split into extra columns?
- No. OCR often breaks 1,00,000 or 12,500.00 into pieces; Sheetshot glues those pieces back into one cell, so Indian and international digit grouping stay intact.
- Is my image uploaded anywhere?
- No. Sheetshot runs the OCR engine (Tesseract, compiled to WebAssembly) inside your browser tab. The picture is read on your device and never sent to a server, so it works for statements, marks and invoices you would not paste into an online converter.
